Checkups & cleanings in Billerica
The least eventful appointment we offer, and by a considerable margin the most valuable.
What a checkup covers
The cleaning is the part patients remember; the examination is the part that prevents expense. Nearly every costly procedure carried out in a dental office — the root canal, the crown, the extraction — began as something small and painless that was detectable months or years earlier.
A cavity identified at the right stage is a filling. The same cavity found once it becomes painful is often a root canal and a crown, at several times the cost. That difference is the argument for attending twice a year.
What happens at a visit
Cleaning
Removal of plaque and hardened tartar that brushing cannot shift, followed by polishing. Where the gums require it, we clean carefully below the gumline.
Examination
Every tooth checked for decay, cracks, wear, and failing older fillings, along with your bite and existing restorations.
Digital x-rays
Taken as a routine part of the exam. They show decay between teeth and problems at the root that can’t be seen by eye.
Gum measurements
Charting pocket depths so changes are caught while they’re still reversible.
Oral cancer screening
A check of the soft tissues, tongue, and throat. Brief, and occasionally the examination that identifies something serious early.
A clear discussion
What we found, what requires treatment, what can reasonably wait, and what each option costs.
How often to come
Every six months is appropriate for most patients. Some require three- or four-month intervals, usually those with a history of gum disease, heavy tartar buildup, diabetes, or who smoke. A small number of low-risk patients can reasonably attend once a year.
We will tell you which interval applies to you and why. It is a clinical judgment based on your mouth, not a default setting.
Returning after a long gap
Patients often return after several years away, and the reasons are usually practical — cost, a difficult previous experience, or competing demands on their time.
The first visit is an examination. We’ll tell you what we find, what needs attention now, what can reasonably wait, and what each option costs before anything is scheduled.
Common questions
How often do I need a cleaning?
Every six months for most people. More often if you have a history of gum disease, build tartar quickly, smoke, or have diabetes.
Are x-rays taken at every visit?
X-rays are a routine part of the examination, because decay between teeth and problems at the root cannot be seen by eye. The interval is based on your risk and history, and we will explain what is being taken and why.
Does a cleaning hurt?
It should not. Sensitivity is more common where there is inflammation, or where a long period has passed between visits. Tell your hygienist and they will adjust.
Does insurance cover checkups?
Most dental plans cover two preventive visits a year at or near 100%. We will check your specific plan and confirm before your visit.
