Non-Implant Tooth Replacement Options

For multiple missing teeth without implants, you typically have three options, depending on the number and location of the gaps in your smile: a dental bridge, a partial denture, or a full denture. A traditional bridge fills in the hole left by one to three missing teeth in a row. It affixes to two healthy teeth that surround the missing ones just like a dental crown. Using clasps that hold onto natural teeth, a partial denture can replace teeth that are more spread out in an arch. Finally, as the name implies, a full denture covers the entire arch of missing teeth.

We use high-quality materials and state-of-the-art technology to create realistic, durable restorations. However, when these restorations just sit on top of the gums without attaching to a root or implant post, the underlying jaw structure can weaken and change, necessitating frequent adjustments and replacements. In fact, traditional bridges and dentures typically need to be replaced about every seven years. Only when these restorations are bonded to dental implants can they become permanent fixtures in your smile and last for more than 30 years.

The Dental Implant Process

For traditional tooth replacement, the restorations are made from simple impressions taken of the mouth and eventually put in place on the gums’ surface. The dental implant process is a little more complex but also much more effective. We will meet with you and create a custom implant treatment approach to meet your specific needs.

Then you’ll visit a local oral surgeon and undergo the placement procedure, during which a few implant posts will be positioned in the jaw bone. You do not have to have a dental implant for each missing tooth. In fact, we can replace a complete arch of teeth with as few as four to six implants. For several months, your jaw bone and tissue will heal and surround the posts, giving your new smile a firm foundation. Once this is complete, you’ll return to our Billerica office, and we’ll permanently attach your restoration to the implants, allowing you to bite, chew, laugh, speak, and smile without worrying whether your replacement teeth will slip.
